Information
Our wedding ceremony and reception are being held at the lovely Gut Immling (Immling Manor), situated in the idyllic Bavarian district of Rosenheim, near the spa town of Bad Endorf.
There are plenty of things to do in the area if you would like to spend a few days there - lakes to swim in and sunbathe by, mountains to hike up and cycle down, saunas and spas to relax in, as well as of course, the wonderful and historic cities of Salzburg and Munich to explore.
For those of you who haven’t been to this part of the world before, we can’t wait to give you a taste of the Bavarian lifestyle over a pretzel and a Weißbier. Prost!
Travel
By Air
The nearest airports to Rosenheim are Munich (MUC) to the north-west, and Salzburg (SZG) to the east. Both airports are about a one-hour drive or a 40-minute to one-hour train journey from Rosenheim.
By Rail
Trains are a great way to travel in Bavaria, regular national and local services operate between Munich, Salzburg and the various towns in and around Rosenheim. Tickets can be purchased online in advance. Seat61 has lots of very useful information: https://www.seat61.com/Germany-trains.htm but to book, Deutsche Bahn will be your best bet: https://www.bahn.com/i/view/index.shtml
Depending on where you arrive and where you are staying, trains run from Munich to Salzburg and you will most likely need to get off at Rosenheim, Bad Endorf, or Prien am Chiemsee.
By Car
If you are travelling from the UK, driving is certainly an option but not recommended unless you’re stopping somewhere on the way. It takes about 13 hours in total from London. The roads in Germany are very smooth (Autobahn) and easy to navigate.
Another option for drivers would be to hire a car once you arrive in Germany. Depending on where you choose to stay (how rural you decide to go), it might prove really useful to have a car to help get around, especially if you want to explore the surrounding area.
In the rural areas and villages, taxis are available but you usually need to book (in German) well in advance and be prepared to wait for one to become available.Accommodation
Accommodation will get booked up as this is a very popular area for holiday-makers, especially at this time of year. Book as early as you can to avoid disappointment!
Depending on what you want out of your trip (apart from a wonderful time at our wedding, of course!) there are a few different options when it comes to accommodation in Bavaria.
AirBnb and HomeAway both offer plenty of places to stay in the area (we usually use them when we visit). However, most of the local villages also have family-run B&Bs and guest houses (called Pensionen) that may not be listed online. We’re happy to help you look, or to communicate with hosts, just ask.
If you are looking for accommodation yourself, you could start by looking in one of the following areas:
Chiemgau
Our wedding will be at Immling Manor which is located in the area of Chiemgau, near lake Chiemsee (aka "the Bavarian Sea"). There are a number of towns nearby to look for places to stay: Bad Endorf is the closest from the venue at 5km and hosts a wonderful spa and sauna complex. Prien am Chiemsee is about 14km away but is situated right on the lake offering beach days, watersports, birdwatching etc. Rimsting is in between - about 10 km from Immling - up the hill from Prien, offering lovely views across the lake and to the Alps.
Rosenheim Town
Rosenheim is the closest major town to Immling Manor. It’s 20km away or about a 30-minute drive.
Activities
We will be staying in the area for at least the week before our big day and would love to show you around! Depending on the weather, we’ll be taking part in the following:
Lake/Beach Day: Lake culture is big in this part of Bavaria, temperatures can hit 35 plus degrees and the weather is fairly predictable. There are plenty of well-developed lakes and beaches around that offer swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing and sunbathing. There are islands to explore, birdwatching and plenty of bars and restaurants that allow you eat by the water. Look out for the freshly grilled Stecklerfisch (fish on a stick).
Mountain/Hiking Day: The Alps are always present on the horizon, no matter where you are in this part of Bavaria. People come here to ski in the winter, but in August, you can take the ski lift or gondola up, or cycle and hike to the summit, or ride a paraglider down again. There are also some lovely restaurants up there where you can take in the amazing views.
Herbstfest (Rosenheim's version of Oktoberfest): It lasts two weeks and is one of the highlights of the year. Normally, it starts around the 25th of August, but unfortunately, next year, it won't start until the 31st - a whole week after our wedding.
